If Nudges Treat their Targets as Rational Agents, Nonconsensual Neurointerventions Can Too

چکیده
Abstract Andreas Schmidt and Neil Levy have recently defended nudging against the objection that nudges fail to treat nudgees as rational agents. rejects two theses been taken support objection: harness irrational processes in nudgee, they subvert nudgee’s rationality. a third thesis may give reasons. I argue these defences can be extrapolated from some nonconsensual neurointerventions; if Schmidt’s Levy’s succeed, then neurointerventions neither irrationality, nor rationality, This, claim, poses challenge both opponents of neurointerventions, defenders nudging.

If 'we' can succeed, 'I' can too: Identity-based motivation and gender in the classroom.
Gender matters in the classroom, but not in the way people may assume; girls are outperforming boys. Identity-Based Motivation (IBM) theory explains why: People prefer to act in ways that feel in-line with important social identities such as gender. If a behavior feels identity-congruent, difficulty is interpreted as meaning that the behavior is important, not impossible, but what feels identit...

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by recurrent seizures influencing about 1% of the worldwide population. Despite much progress in understanding the pathogenesis of epilepsy, the molecular basis of human epilepsy still remains unclear. Common approaches for pharmacotherapy of epilepsy are still directed towards controlling the symptoms and suppression of seizures. Clinical use ...

For many of the world’s major financial markets, the proportion of market activity that is due to the actions of “automated trading” software agents is rising: in Europe and the USA, major exchanges are reporting that 30%–75% of all transactions currently involve automated traders. This is a major application area for artificial intelligence and autonomous agents, yet there have been very few c...
متن کاملEmotions as Heuristics for Rational Agents
In this paper we argue that a model of human emotions provide reasonable and useful heuristics for 1) reducing and controlling nondeterminism involved in an agent’s decision making process, 2) flexible cooperation and coordination between agents, and 3) building efficacious human-agent interfaces to facilitate the interaction between human users and artificial agents in hybrid multi-agent syste...
